Decoding exhaust fumes colours and what they mean

Have you ever noticed the colour of your vehicle’s exhaust fumes or had someone other than a mechanic alert you that something may be off? Do you even pay attention to that? Well, maybe it is time you started. Arrive Alive has advised drivers to pay close attention to the colour of their exhaust fumes, as they may indicate a vehicle’s engine health.

Here’s how to decode the hues:

BLUE/GREY SMOKE can be caused by:

• Oil leak in the combustion chamber

• Damaged Piston Rings

• Oil Burning

BLACK SMOKE can be caused by:

• Blocked Air Filter

• Malfunction in the Fuel Injection system

• Blocked Manifold

WHITE SMOKE

There are two types of white smoke, thin and thick smoke.

Thin White smoke is nothing to worry about, especially on cold mornings.

Thicker White smoke can be caused by:

• Cracked Engine Block

• Damaged / Blown Head Gasket

Be proactive and monitor these signs to ensure the roadworthiness of your vehicle and your safety on the road.

Should you notice any dark colour fumes, do not ignore them and hope for the best. Act promptly and curb any further damage to your engine. Just book your car in to be checked by one of our friendly vehicle experts at any of our service centres in the Eastern Cape. For your convenience, you can even book online. Click here to book.
